Mascots from four Chicago-based sports teams and four radio personalities helped The Salvation Army Chicago Metropolitan Division kick off the 71st annual Donut Day campaign to raise funds to help feed the homeless, senior citizens, children, and families in need.

Participating at the James R. Thompson Center Plaza celebration and serving as Donut Day celebrity taggers were John Williams and Leslie Keiling, of WGN 720; John Hultman, of WBBM 780; Joe Soto, of V103; Sky Guy, of the Chicago Sky Women’s National Basketball Association; Sparky, of the Chicago Fire Major League Soccer Team; Skates, of the Chicago Wolves Hockey Team; and DIBS, of DePaul University.

Hundreds of people contact The Salvation Army each day seeking assistance with feeding their families. Requests for groceries have increased more than 100 percent at some Army Corps Community Centers as new clients—including middle income families—ask The Army for help.

Eighty-nine cents of every dollar donated to The Salvation Army is spent on services and programs that directly benefit the needy. The Army, often, is many people’s last hope.

Sky Guy Wins Battle of the Mascotsmascot race

Mascots from four Chicago-based sports teams went head-to-head at the James R. Thompson Center Plaza in a friendly competition to see which one raises the most money for The Salvation Army feeding programs for people in need.

Sky Guy, of the Chicago Sky Women’s National Basketball Association, edged out his three rivals— Sparky, of the Chicago Fire Major League Soccer Team; Skates, of the Chicago Wolves Hockey Team; and DIBS, of DePaul University—to win the bragging rights of being The Salvation Army's Chicago Top Mascot. Sky Guy also won the mascot popularity contest conducted on The Salvation Army website.

Sky Guy will receive a "Doing The Most Good Gold Coin" and a framed certificate in recognition of his two wins.
