Erase Hunger in Chicago

There is a tremendous need to address the growing epidemic of hunger in and around Chicago. The number of our neighbors who are poor and hungry already tops more than two million people in the six-county Chicago region alone.

This is not a problem simply facing the homeless - in fact, 61 percent of working poor families cope with the inability to afford food for themselves and their children.

For just $32, the Chicago Metropolitan Division can provide enough groceries to feed a family of four for a week. Your contribution can help fund the feeding programs provided by The Salvation Army throughout the Greater Chicagoland area.

Anna looks forward to The Salvation Army’s summer camp, because she knows she will get three meals a day.

Ten-year-old Anna is the youngest of four girls. Her mother works hard to keep food on the table. But healthy foods can be expensive. And there are many months when the money runs out, and the family must turn to The Salvation Army for assistance.

Though Anna is just a child, she is very grateful for the help. She is especially thankful for The Salvation Army’s Wonderland Camp, where she knows she will receive three square meals every day.

“May I please have 10 meals?” Denise quietly asked the workers of our mobile feeding unit on Lower Wacker.

Though it was an odd plea, our team handed over the food. When Denise returned the next night with the same request, we knew there had to be more to her story. One of our workers accompanied Denise to her “hiding place” in the bowels of the city, and discovered she was caring for four young children.

Within two hours, we moved the frightened family to their own quarters in The Salvation Army’s Evangeline Booth Lodge. This transitional living facility is a safe haven for families in crisis. In addition to nourishing food, families at the lodge receive secure shelter, health screening, and employment counseling to help them get back on their feet.

Vince is quick to share how The Salvation Army changed his life. Today he is returning the favor, and helping Erase Hunger in Chicago.

Vince is the face of The Salvation Army here in Chicago — in more ways than one.

Earlier in his life he was the face of those we help. Growing up on the far south side, he spent his youth in neighborhoods ravaged by hunger, poverty, and gangs. Today, serving with The Salvation Army, he is the face of hope for others struggling with the hardships of inner city life.

“I do what I do because I should be dead,” Vince says. “I think I’m a miracle, but there are other miracles waiting to happen in our community.”

Longtime Supporter Turns to The Salvation Army for Food

John recently visited The Salvation Army, but not to make a donation as he had done many times before. This time he was the one who needed help.

For years John had been a regular supporter of The Salvation Army. With a thriving home improvement business, he had a strong desire to give back to the community and help those who had come upon hard times. Then he became one of them.

John’s business slowed with the economy, then came to a screeching halt. Finally, he had to close the doors and start looking for other work. But jobs were scarce. There were so many others like him scouring the city for work.

John eventually got a job delivering pizza, but it’s not enough to feed his family. So he came to us for food — a longtime giver turned humble receiver.
