Day Camp/After School Counselor/Waukegan



The Day Camp/After School Counselor assists in Summer Day Camp and After School programming that promotes the vision of the Waukegan Corps and the mission of The Salvation Army.


-Responsible for the care and well-being of program participants.

-Take a leadership role for all aspects of the summer day camp/after school program including Bible study, games, crafts, music, recreation, computers and more.

-Give support, by your actions, to the program concepts of love, understanding, and self-worth of each person.

-Serve as a role model of the Christian life for campers, parents, and surrounding community.

-Be accountable for First Aid and safety of campers.

-Help foster a welcoming and affirming Christ-centered program that celebrates each member’s gifts and abilities.

-Always place campers first and provide for a safe, fun and wholesome environment that is conducive to growth and a positive experience.

-Be prepared to accept other related duties and assignments as assigned by the Youth & Family Ministries Director.

-Uphold the-mission of The Salvation Army.


This individual relates to and interacts with all Day Camp/After School staff and may interact with parents/guardians of campers. In light of these opportunities, a Day Camp/After School counselor will act as a representative of the Army and its mission to anyone they may come into contact with.


The Day Camp/After School Counselor will report to the Youth & Family Ministries Director who will approve any change in regular camp activities, so as to ensure no overlap or conflict with other programs. 


The Day Camp/After School Counselor will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.


-Minimum of a High School diploma is required.

-Two years of college education is a plus, but is not mandatory for this position.

-Valid Driver’s license/MVR clearance.

-Minimum age 18 preferred.


-A commitment to the mission of the Salvation Army and youth ministry.

-Excellent organizational skills.

-Proven supervisory and program management skills.

-An enthusiastic and friendly approach to job duties with the ability to lead others positively.

-An interpersonal style that is service oriented as well as anticipates and responds to the needs of campers.

-A flexible style that also displays a willingness to learn.

-A “hands-on” knowledge of how to effectively work with diversity in the workplace.

-Demonstrates sound judgment in a variety of situations.

-Good written and oral communication skills.

-A team player and self-starter that can follow through with camp activities.

-Ability to interact and adapt to a variety of different personalities and temperaments.

-Should have experience working with low income and at risk children.


-This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.

-This individual will keep the Youth & Family Ministries Director informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.

-This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.


This position is required to do moderate physical work.  In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position the employee is regularly required to perform duties associated with a day camp for children.  Must be able to lift or move up to 25 lbs. The work environment for this position includes a classroom and a gym like environment with at times can generate a high noise level as well as other outside activities.


This position has an essential role in fulfilling the full mission of the Salvation Army.  Because of the integral nature of this responsibility:

-Desire to nurture and develop young people personally and spiritually through creative summer day camp programming.
