Before long, summer vacation will be here. And thanks to you, that means two very important words for many Chicago-area children: SUMMER CAMP!
Just ask Brianna (11), Arianna (9), and Jayden (8), who had the time of their lives last summer at The Salvation Army’s Wonderland Camp.
As soon as they boarded the bus in their gritty Englewood neighborhood for the two-hour ride to camp, all three were giddy with excitement.
“The first night we had a campfire,” says Brianna. “I made s’mores for the first time!” Continue reading “Summer Camp is the Best!”
Ten-year-old Jaelyn couldn’t wait for The Salvation Army Summer Green and Sports Day Camp to start. She’d heard so much about it from her friends. The fun art classes and projects. And the community garden, where she could try her hand at growing vegetables, herbs and flowers.
But what Jaelyn didn’t expect at camp was to fall in love. With golf.
Thanks to our partnership with the “Hook a Kid on Golf” program — and the generous support of friends like you — youngsters at our camp are discovering the sport, never before available to kids on the South Side of Chicago.
“Coach Rasar taught us how to putt, set our position, and how to swing,” Jaelyn said. “I love when we putt and use our drivers on the course and get to see how far we hit the ball.”
Of course, our camp is about much more than golf and the other fun activities. It’s about helping children like Jaelyn and her sister Jada realize their full potential.
“The girls seem more independent and confident,” says their mother, Cheryl. “They’re more outgoing and want to go above and beyond. I’m watching my little girls grow up to be ladies.”
