RunFurShelter has teamed up with The Salvation Army to hold their 4th annual 5K run on Sunday, May 18, at Sherman Immediate Care Center, 2000 McDonald Road, in South Elgin. All proceeds from the race will go toward the purchase of dog and cat food and veterinary costs for the pets of homebound seniors enrolled in The Salvation Army’s Golden Diners Senior Nutrition Program. Last year, RunFurShelter raised more than $28,000 to help area animals in need.
RunFurShelter made the decision to partner with The Salvation Army after the Golden Diners Program reported that seniors were having difficulty affording enough food to feed their pets. Providing pet food to homebound seniors will enable them to keep their furry companions, which is key to combating loneliness and depression.
Entry to the 5K is $35 and includes a t-shirt and timing chip. In addition to the traditional 5K race, this year’s event will also include a one-mile memory walk/run, in honor of our beloved pets who are no longer with us, and a 100-meter sprint for children. Each year, more than 5,000 seniors in Kane and McHenry counties are served by The Salvation Army Golden Diners program. Golden Diners delivers more than 800 meals every day. Homebound seniors receive a friendly visit and a hot, nutritious meal delivered by The Salvation Army. The visit also serves as a daily wellness check. The program helps prevent malnutrition for seniors, as well as avoid institutional care for as long as is safely possible. Golden Diners congregate meals and wellness checks also alleviate seniors’ isolation.
Beginning in January, RunFurShelter will host monthly food drives to keep the pet food pantry stocked. If you are interested in volunteering at any of these drives, please contact Sara Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Salvation Army Golden Diners Program would like to thank Tanya Esquivel, Nancy Meaney, Sara Johnson and all of the dedicated volunteers at RunFurShelter for their tireless commitment providing the South Elgin and Elgin communities with fun and active family activities that benefit a great cause.
