Donut Day is a Holiday with a Cause

HdonutDayMobileundreds of Salvation Army Donut Day taggers wore their vests with pride in the Chicagoland area collecting donations and thanking donors with an Entenmann classic chocolate donut. Funds raised during this annual event support The Salvation Army programs and services, including meals for the hungry, disaster assistance, and safe havens for youth. Last year we raised nearly $45,000 and this year we expect to exceed that amount.  We noticed a decline during the Red Kettle fundraiser due to the harsh conditions of this past winter. That, coupled with increased needs made the success of Donut Day even more important.

The Salvation Army will celebrate Donut Days on May 30 and 31, and June 6 and 7. Staff and volunteers will be at intersections and store fronts throughout the greater Chicagoland area collecting donations in exchange for a tasty Entenmann’s classic chocolate donut.

The annual event highlights The Salvation Army’s services to the most vulnerable in our communities, including our veterans. “National Donut Day has become a true American tradition in which The Salvation Army asks the general public to remember and honor our veterans, as well as their neighbors in need who are facing hunger, homelessness and crisis,” said Lt. Colonel Ralph Bukiewicz, Commander of The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division. Continue reading “The Salvation Army Honors Vets during Annual Donut Days”

Historic 75th Annual National Donut Day Celebrated in Chicago

Chicago, Illinois – The Salvation Army and Entenmann’s Bakery partnered to celebrate the 75th annual National Donut Days on Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2, 2012.  Hundreds of Salvation Army Donut Day “taggers” throughout the greater Chicagoland area gave commemorative Donut Day tags to donors whose gifts will help support programs for children, seniors, the homeless and families in need.  The holiday, held annually on the first Friday of June, was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” who served the treats to soldiers during World War I. This significant occasion established the donut as a long-standing symbol of the services The Salvation Army continues to provide.

Local media celebrities Brotha Fred and Angi from KISS FM Radio and Valerie Warner and Ryan Chiaverini from Chicago’s “Windy City Live” morning shows helped The Salvation Army kick-off Donut Days with a free concert at the Millennium Park Grill on Friday, June 1. This event featured free donuts courtesy of Entenmann’s and live performances by Jamie Lono of NBC’s “The Voice” fame, the ever-popular Chicago jazz ensemble Entourage and The Salvation Army Bermuda Divisional Band.

In honor of the origin of Donut Day, veterans of the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars, and their families, were also present and honored for their service to our country.

The Donut Day tradition began on the battlefields of France during World War One, when Salvation Army workers went to the front to deliver spiritual aid and comfort to US soldiers and their allies and serve as a link between the soldiers and their families back home. Salvation Army “Donut Lassies” served coffee and donuts to soldiers in the trenches to bring them cheer.  Donut Day became an official Salvation Army annual fundraising event in 1938 in Chicago.
