Volunteer Day at Evanston Corps

Focus Development

Focus Development employees spent the afternoon at our Evanston Corps Community Center on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, providing materials and labor for much-needed repairs to several areas of the facility. They replaced shattered glass in our Chapel area and converted the 2-room food pantry into a larger, more workable space. Focus Development employees also did major work on the bathrooms, including hanging doors and replacing stained tile with new ceramic tile. Read More

The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division Welcomes New Leaders

The Salvation Army has announced the appointments of Lt. Colonels Charles H. Smith and Sharon Smith as Divisional Commander and Divisional Director of Women’s Ministries of the Metropolitan Division. The Smiths assumed their new positions on October 1.

The Metropolitan Division held an official installation ceremony and welcome for Lt. Colonels Smith on Sunday, October 12 at the Norridge Citadel Corps. The installation, led by Commissioners Paul and Carol Seiler, featured lively performances by the Norridge Citadel Band, Norridge Citadel Songsters, Oakbrook Terrace Corps Singing Company and the Hispanic Dance Teams from the Rockford and Belvidere corps community centers. Officers, soldiers and youth from throughout the Metropolitan Division welcomed our new leaders, offering them words of hope and praise.

Seniors Launch Englewood’s First Balcony Garden at Red Shield Center

Englewood may be known as a food desert, but a group of spunky senior women is growing their own bumper crop of fresh fruit and vegetables in containers at The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Center.

The third-floor balcony at the corps community center had housed a rain barrel for some time, providing a ready water supply for a future garden. The Red Shield Center’s corps officer Lt. Nikki Hughes researched small-space gardening and discovered milk crate gardening. It’s an easy and inexpensive method using common square milk crates partially lined with plastic so that water is drawn down into the potting soil rather than leaking out the sides. Read More
