Lieutenant A.J. Zimmerman on Black History Month

“God sees color. God created color. Color is beautiful.”

To commemorate Black History Month, we asked a local beloved Salvation Army officer about his perspective on celebrating his race and ethnicity.

A few years ago, Lieutenant A.J. Zimmerman was transferred to lead a Salvation Army after-school program which was very similar to the one he had grown up in. The program had 50 boys. After introducing himself to the parents, Zimmerman discovered only 3 kids had a father at home. After this revelation, he was determined to be that male presence for those 3 boys.

“It is very important to have diversity…The Salvation Army definitely sees color and we rejoice in that.”
