The Salvation Army Supports Emergency Response Teams as they Battle Multiple Fires

Early this week the fire departments from Cicero and surrounding towns battled multiple fires in the pre-dawn hours. The department responded first to a five-alarm fire, which destroyed a warehouse and the neighboring building. Firefighters had their hands full with the blaze as the water froze upon exiting the hydrants, hampering their efforts.

The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services department immediately sent out a Rapid Response Unit and a Mobile Feeding Unit to provide hydration, hot meals and other support for the firefighters.  “There’s nothing like a cup of hot stew and hot chocolate in the middle of a sub-zero night while fighting a fire,” said a firefighter. FireCicero

Later in the morning, the Army responded to a second fire at an apartment building just blocks away from the warehouse fire. For nearly six hours, Army staff and volunteers provided firefighters and residents with hydration, hot meals and emotional support.

In 2013 The Salvation Army responded to 50 local disasters including floods and fires.
