“I feel happy that I can lend my time to help people by giving them their next meal.” Emmanuel Henry has been volunteering with The Salvation Army since he was 14 years old. Now 18 and a high school senior, Emmanuel volunteers with the Army’s Mobile Feeding Program, dedicating his weekend days to help hungry adults and children throughout the Chicago area. “We start at 11:30 and go until 8 at night. We give people hot soup or chili, juice, tea and water, and we get the chance to pray with them if they like.” The Salvation Army’s Mobile Feeding Program delivers nutritious hot meals to people at 26 locations in Uptown, the West Side and the South Side. Last year, the program served more than 214,000 meals. The program also feeds hungry souls. A van accompanies the Army’s Mobile Outreach Unit and is ready to take individuals directly to a Salvation Army shelter or rehabilitation center, where they can receive the long-term help they need to transform their lives. “The Salvation Army is all about helping people and sharing Jesus with people. I’m a Christian and I like being able to teach people about Jesus and the wonderful things He does and can do in their lives.”
